Let food be your first medicine
Willande Unelus, MA, RDN, LDN, CHN
Hi, I’m Willande, a Dietitian and Cultural Nutritionist. I graduated from North Carolina Central University with a B.S. in Nutrition and Dietetics. I specialize in cultural nutrition, food-as-medicine, and disease prevention. Before becoming a dietitian, I worked as an art teacher, helping students express themselves through creativity. My interest in nutrition grew when my children
experienced eczema and food allergies as babies. What finally helped them heal was returning to my traditional cooking and using food as medicine. I was taught how to cook traditional Haitian food before I was ten years old. Those skills my aunts and mom passed on to me, gave me the passion and confidence to prepare Haitian food that nourish me, my family and friends. I also hang on to the traditional teas used as medicine and nourishment when needed.
Today, I am dedicated to helping Caribbean, African, and other communities reconnect with their cultural foods to support better health, just as I did and continue to do for myself and my family.
As a Haitian-born, North Carolina–based dietitian, I understand how powerful our cultural foods are, but sometimes mistaken as unhealthy. Too many people believe they should give up the meals that comfort, nourish, and connect them to their roots when they encounter health issues. When prepared properly, traditional foods can be healthy and healing for you.
My last visit to Haiti was in 2018, when my family and I joined a group to explore the Citadelle Laferrière, one of the wonders of the Caribbean. As a college student, I studied abroad in England learning about history and art. I have also traveled to Egypt for a graduate Africana studies course, to Jordan and Israel on a church tour, and to St. Thomas for a friend’s wedding. I love experiencing new cultures, trying foods from around the world, and being around people from all walks of life.
My mission is simple:
To help people honor their cultural foods while improving their health and wellness, for a better, more fulfilled life.
I'll help you take back your health with the hidden knowledge from your culture. Are you ready?
I speak English and Haitian Creole fluently.
MY APPROACH
At I.C. Nutrition & Wellness, I provide compassionate, culturally grounded nutrition counseling with one goal in mind, help you care for your body while staying true to who you are. I believe in:

Your traditions matter. Your flavors matter. Your story matters.
We build a plan around the foods you love-rice, plantains, legumes, fufu, stew chicken, soup joumou, and more.
Education Rooted in Community
I focus on helping you understand your health, manage chronic conditions, and build sustainable habits that support your long-term wellness.
Small, Consistent Steps
Health is a journey, not a punishment.
Together, we take steady steps toward balance, vitality, and confidence.
WHY I DO THIS WORK
Growing up in a Haitian household taught me the power of food, how it heals, brings people together, and preserves culture. My passion is helping people stop seeing their cultural foods as “bad” or “unhealthy” and start seeing them as tools for strength, resilience, and longevity.
My work centers individuals who often feel unseen or misunderstood in traditional healthcare systems. Here, you’ll always be listened to, respected, and supported.
